Common questions

What time is navkarsi in Port Blair today?
Navkarsi falls about forty-eight minutes after sunrise, so it depends on Port Blair's own sunrise and shifts a little each day. The time is at the top of this page.
Why do these times differ from a printed calendar?
Almanacs differ in the horizon correction they apply to sunrise, and some reckon porisi from the start of the first prahar rather than from sunrise itself. A few minutes of difference is expected; where a community follows a particular panchang, that one should be kept.
Can a pachchakkhan be taken after the time has begun?
No. The vow is a resolve made in advance for a stated period; taken afterwards it is not a pachchakkhan. If a time has passed, the next one is still available.
What is the difference between chovihar and tivihar?
Chovihar renounces all four kinds of intake after sunset, including water. Tivihar renounces three and permits water. This page lists chovihar; which is appropriate is a matter for your own teacher.
